Statement of Faith

We believe in the Christian faith as declared in the Scriptures and passed down to us throughout history. Therefore, on this page you will find our statement of faith as well as the ancient creeds of the church that we continue to affirm. These statements do not replace Scripture nor do they carry any authority over it. They must continually submit to and be tested by the Bible. However, we do believe these statements to faithfully articulate the teachings of Scripture.


Covenant Life Church
The Bible is the inspired, infallible, and inerrant Word of God, the product of holy men of old who spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. It describes the covenant of God with humanity and is the authoritative guide in teaching, conduct and community.

God has revealed Himself as existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit—distinct in personality yet inseparable in essence and unity.

The Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, and was both totally God and totally man. He came to fulfill the will of God, destroy the work of the devil, give abundant life, and accomplish our redemption. He died for our sins, was buried and rose again on the third day. He ascended to the right hand of the Father, where He now reigns, and will come again at the end of this age.

Man is a created being, made in the likeness and image of God, but because of the sin of Adam the law of sin and death governs unregenerate man. Separate from God, man is a sinner, excluded from the covenants of promise and without hope in this world. However, God, in His love, provided salvation for mankind. Salvation of sinners is by grace through confessional faith in the work of Jesus in His death on the cross and resurrection from the dead. The gospel of Christ is the power of God to all who believe and is the only way for restoration of humanity through the removal of sin, guilt, and the penalty of sin. Through salvation, people become new creations, born again with a destiny in God. We are not saved by works but unto good works, which God has prepared in advance for us to do.

The expression of our faith in the salvation God has provided is three-fold. First, we repent, turn from our own ways and independent lifestyle and turn toward God and obedience to His will. Second, we are baptized in water. Water baptism is done by immersion in water as an act of obedience and public confession of the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It is an identification of the believer with Christ in His death, burial and resurrection. It accomplishes a final cutting away of the body of sin and raises us to new life. Third, we receive the infilling of the Holy Spirit. Baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire is a gift from God as promised by the Lord Jesus Christ and the Old Testament prophets to all believers. It is received distinctively within the process of new birth. This infilling is for empowerment to witness for Christ and enablement in the gifts of the Spirit.

Communion, also called the Lord’s Table, the Lord’s Supper and Breaking of Bread, is a practice for all believers and is an important expression of our covenant with God and each other.

Christ will return to judge the living and the dead. Eternal life has been given unto the believer and he/she will be bodily raised from the dead unto everlasting life in the presence of God. The unbeliever is spiritually dead and will be bodily raised unto eternal judgment—experiencing God’s wrath and punishment in the lake of fire.

We believe in the present day operation of the ministry gifts God has given the Church: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers. They are given to equip God’s people for works of service, so that the Body of Christ may be built up, until we all reach unity in the Faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

The Apostles’ Creed
We believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. We believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was Incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life; who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. And I believe one holy catholic* and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Athanasian Creed

  1. “Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic* faith;
  2. Which faith except every one do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt he shall perish everlastingly.
  3. And the catholic* faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity;
  4. Neither confounding the persons, nor dividing the substance.
  5. For there is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Spirit.
  6. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit is all one, the glory equal, the majesty co-eternal.
  7. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit.
  8. The Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, and the Holy Spirit uncreated.
  9. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Spirit incomprehensible.
  10. The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Spirit eternal.
  11. And yet there are not three eternals, but one eternal.
  12. As also there are not three uncreated nor three incomprehensibles, but one uncreated and one incomprehensible.
  13. So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, and the Holy Spirit almighty;
  14. And yet there are not three almighties, but one almighty.
  15. So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God;
  16. And yet they are not three Gods, but one God.
  17. So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Spirit Lord;
  18. And yet they are not three Lords, but one Lord.
  19. For like as we are compelled by the Christian truth to acknowledge every person by himself to be God and Lord;
  20. So we are forbidden by the catholic* religion to say: There are three Gods or three Lords.
  21. The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten.
  22. The Son is of the Father alone; not made nor created, but begotten.
  23. The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son; neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding.
  24. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirit’s.
  25. And in this Trinity none is afore, or after another; none is greater, or less than another.
  26. But the whole three persons are co-eternal, and co-equal.
  27. So that in all things, as said before, the Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshipped.
  28. He therefore that will be saved must thus think of the Trinity.
  29. Furthermore it is necessary to everlasting salvation that he also believe rightly the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  30. For the right faith is that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and man.
  31. God of the substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds; and man of the substance of His mother, born in the world.
  32. Perfect God and perfect man, of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting.
  33. Equal to the Father as touching His Godhead, and inferior to the Father as touching His manhood.
  34. Who, although He is God and man, yet He is not two, but one Christ.
  35. One, not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh, but by taking of the manhood into God.
  36. One altogether, not by confusion of substance, but by unity of person.
  37. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man, so God and man is one Christ.
  38. Who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead;
  39. He ascended into heaven, He sits on the right hand of the Father, God Almighty;
  40. From there He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
  41. At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies;
  42. And shall give account of their own works.
  43. And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting. And they that have done evil into everlasting fire.
  44. This is the catholic* faith, which except a man believe faithfully, he cannot be saved.”

Definition of Chalcedon
Therefore, following the holy fathers, we all with one accord teach men to acknowledge one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, at once complete in Godhead and complete in manhood, truly God and truly man, consisting also of a reasonable soul and body; of one substance with the Father as regards his Godhead, and at the same time of one substance with us as regards his manhood; like us in all respects, apart from sin; as regards his Godhead, begotten of the Father before the ages, but yet as regards his manhood begotten, for us men and for our salvation, of Mary the Virgin, the God-bearer; one and the same Christ, Son, Lord, Only-begotten, recognized in two natures, without confusion, without change, without division, without separation; the distinction of natures being in no way annulled by the union, but rather the characteristics of each nature being preserved and coming together to form one person and subsistence, not as parted or separated into two persons, but one and the same Son and Only-begotten God the Word, Lord Jesus Christ; even as the prophets from earliest times spoke of him, and our Lord Jesus Christ himself taught us, and the creed of the fathers has handed down to us.
